Such a beautiful read first thing—thank you! I felt all of it, all at once. My mantra lately is that we are all connected. I wish we could all see and feel that. You are me, and I am you. 🤍
"A life without faith is dark. It’s taxes and root canals, bureaucratic misunderstanding." This is just the most perfect sentence—the most perfect set of paragraphs, actually—and I'm going to steal them and use them whenever anyone of little faith and much outrage asks me why I have mine and why I'm not. Happy Thanksgiving, and many blessings to you and yours!
Leandra, I live for this post. Like you said, kids are the ultimate exposer. I find that to be true in my DM’s as well. Just when you may start to feel superior in your balanced thoughts, your lean towards consideration and thoughtfulness, you find in many of those who write you that they think the exact same way. And it starts to make you wonder, if so many of us think with balance, if we understand nuance and thrive on hearing contrarian view points that make us reflect, then who are these few that take up space in our heads convincing us that people are otherwise?
I think so much of it has to do with what gets lost in digital communication. It’s why when there is a lot of volatility in the conversation taking place online it can feel SO good to go outside and have a kind exchange with a stranger
“That sticking up for yourself, that resilient fight for the weird — it’s what gets me through the end of the run.”
Eminem and Taylor Swift…and YOU Leandra.
Your fight for your own weird and your continued vulnerability and raw tenderness is why YOU are so inspiring. I’m grateful to be alive at the same you are. Thank you for this essay. ❤️
ohhh goosebumps. "The reason human connection feels so good is because it’s a risk. You take the risk of showing yourself to someone else, of exposing some part of you that is soft or perhaps not yet fully formed and when you are received tenderly, the resulting feeling is complete aliveness." .....
Too many favourite bits to pick just one. I loved reading this on my Sunday morning in bed with coffee. Thank you for another beautiful share Leandra. ❤️
"To access the truest and weirdest, most original parts of yourself and unleash them onto the world."
I actually cut and saved this quote, because it is really what I am trying to do as an artist. I realize even if I create something of value, that doesn't mean that people will move towards it. But it is always the hope.
It truly is a process to find these parts of yourself. I want it to be a positive process and outcome too.
I think RuPaul does that, and John Waters, and Tim Burton....but can I?
I would even challenge you to ask if I create something of value but it doesn't feel like an emotional/creative risk to me, does it matter if people move towards it? There is a catharsis about putting your work out into the world when it is honest and real
Getting people to move towards it is the goal these days online.....I suppose being clearer about what I am doing would help the honesty and the realness....
Thank you for this. These are things I’ve thought about myself as I go into the “core” of myself, as you say. So amazing how people who you don’t know can move you and relate to people so well, you’ve moved me with this.
I love philosopher Leandra ~ it reminds me of listening to you (mid 2010’s) on your podcast .. Newly wed, b4 babies & so wise beyond your chron-age 🥰🥰(felt more fun to write than years)
That running path is such a vortex. Thank you for sharing & tons of love always
Loved this, so spot on and also kinda makes me wanna run around that reservoir. Love the honesty about how we are all just human and not one of us is any better than the other. Happy Thanksgiving, thanks for all your writing and style. So good.
How incredibly lovely and what a lovely way to wrap up the day. Thanks for always bringing us wonderful fashion and good ideas! Happy Happy Thanksgiving!
