What do you wear when it’s not hot or cold? The outfit equivalent of a bridge, I say. The way you do this is by combining pieces from multiple seasons. From my own estimations, this plays out best as sandals with a sweater/sweatshirt/jacket a la:
Or with shorts and boots — my current preference of the two suggestions.
Why this over that? Because it’s true what they say about your extremities being the most important thing to keep warm, and boots sups def keep your feet warm. You can do with cycling shorts too, like this:
But it has to be closer to like, 70 degrees for practical reasons and I guess as far as reason goes, you do also have to find it reasonable to present yourself in such a way that your legs and vagina are essentially completely exposed, which you might not. Alternatively, you might add a trench coat?
But the longer length feels most fresh. It reminds me of a cue from Celine’s Spring 2020 collection, one of Hedi Slimane’s first real pushes towards the revival of the French bourgeois aesthetic.
So let’s focus on long shorts and boots.
Sorry, wrong pic!
The shorts I’m wearing like three pictures ago with the sequined jacket flare out slightly, but I think a long cut-off like this, or another kind of Bermuda short like this would work just as well.
It depends on what you have in your closet.
The ideal length of short as I see it, to maximize the length of your body is like 2-3 inches above knee so that it covers the majority of your thigh, but isn’t too long that it intercepts the top of the boot.
Meanwhile, the boots likely stop at the same distance (2-3 inches) below your knee. I’m using these boots as opposed to a riding style because they look a bit like rain or gardening boots in the spirit of spring on account of the tracks on the sole. I recommend shorts with wider leg holes because they’re less demanding.
If you’d rather not wear a jacket, a thin knit layer under a thicker knit will keep you warm — and if it’s an errant 75-degree day, I say you throw the rules out the window and just get dressed up.
Signing off,
Leandra
