My tip: have a set time each day/ week when you log on to social media. Schedule it like an exercise class or a chore with a set time frame rather than a leisure pursuit. Give it boundaries, basically

Another reader Lauren said something similar. I think it is key. Treating it as the sort of “work” that it is, and creating healthy distance. Is that what you do or have you completely separated form it

I don’t keep it on my phone. So I download it and keep it for a few hours or a few days, sometimes a week. And then I delete it for a week or two. At the moment I have a new series of The Missing out so I have to download it once a week to post that. But when I had my baby I downloaded it once a month, for 3 months, and I think that was a pretty key reason why I avoided PPD this time. It’s just not good for my brain.

SIZING up in winter pants = genius.

I’m still in midst of bi-coastal wardrobe madness cull & no pants are safe 🤣🤣 my process of rifling thru clothing racks .. pulling things off to sell/consign/donate..

Since I’ve become ruthless about comfort .. even the slightest bit of effort w buttons, clasps & those pants are OuT!!!!

If I cannot tuck a merino wool into that waistband… that is a pair of pants that’s bound to make me roll my eyes. 😂😂

Thank you for nudging me to Tory's web site and look at what's to come. I loved her when she first came on the scene, but then I felt like I grew up and she didn't. She could still tone those logos way down.

Agree with Daniela jeans. I've tried multiple brands and still don't feel quite put together in them. So far my favorite are Ayr's Secret Sauce and I'm sticking with those for now. Love my cords, for sure!

Oh for sure. I’m an idiot for not including the vintage jacket I have from my

Grandma. She is Turkish and bought it when she still lived there in the early 80s and the shape is so nice and the leather so buttery

Maybe you should try Levi’s 501?

Expand full comment

Funny you should mention Levi's 501 because it really hits the mark for me on the first key insight re "the size we wear can be the difference between loving your clothes and hating them". I think denim is all about fit right? My closet covers a wide range since I have had 3 kids over the last 15 years of amassing my wardrobe so between the too loose, too tight, just right I kind of lose my mind and hate everything. It reminds me of Carrie in Sex and the City when she says she will never be a Natasha... just always slightly off. The wrong size just makes an otherwise good outfit miss the mark.

Anyway my point about 501s... I recently purchased 3 different sizes not knowing what would be the right amount of loose to get the look I wanted...and being 5ft tall a 30 inch inseam requires a hem in order to achieve the right sock ratio with loafers, sneakers or skin ratio with mesh and ballet flats.... so I took those 3 different sizes to get hemmed to 3 different inseams and I am still not quite there. The leg opening changes a bit when the denim is hemmed too. The whole thing sent me into an existential spiral last night.

That being said I do think the Levi 501s (90s) are a solid choice. Still Here NY childhoods are also great.

Are you after a lower rise vibe and the jeans aren’t cutting it because the waist is too high?

Expand full comment

I am happy with the rise, it's more the leg shape... feels like jeans are either too tight (skinny) or too wide (dumpy) for my height or whatever size I am getting and what kind of hem work has to be done but on others it hits right. I am on en endless denim quest, I hate it because it makes me feel like I can never be satisfied and dont want to keep buying and buying denim. If I size up in the 501 for example I get puckering in the butt and front pocket area and once hemmed they look like wide leg rather than relaxed 90s.

Have a look at the range from Jeanerica. I like the Eiffel shape in high and low rise and find they’re a solid, true straight leg. How tall are you? You have inseam options w them! (also, the giuliva heritage Dylan is great. Would recommend you size up 1x to your reg size if trying those)
