A shortlist of outfit ideas from the 9th month, for the very hot heat (styled using Croissant -- the platform that guarantees buyback on various items)
I liked the wrangling you did with this. Personally I find it a bit grim - like calculating the emotional cost of a break-up before you enter into a relationship - but it's kind of cool from a tech perspective. Good luck for the next few weeks L <3
Lol like a fashion pre nup? I am super intrigued by the product and the potential of what it can do to the market — I actually sought them out. Tons of questions still but it really does feel like a free returns thing in that it could genuinely change how we think about what we buy. Idk
I think there's a tricky line between incentivizing over consumption, akin to BNPL, and encouraging items to be brought back into circular systems. BUT I agree that more people should buy with resale in mind — you could play a net-spend game, but it'd take effort.
My hope is not that people buy more things that they discard after a year (maybe that's the part that feels a bit grim), but instead are pushed to think about items they are not wearing and whether they could get 2nd, 3rd, 4th lives in other closets vs sitting in the back of your own, plus some extra cash to re-invest in styles that feel more you! There's definitely something to more transparency and visibility for resale.
Personally, I'd like to know where I can buy the items they buy back! Do they have a retail website or brick and mortar? I love buying pre-loved in an effort to save money.
such a good question. i'm going to ask. also really curious about the buyback process. like is there a facility where they store everything/drop off locations around diff cities a la TRR, etc
I’m in love with the Khaite boots but all I find are the leather ones and costing around $1,300. Could the price have gone up so quickly? And will they make the suede ones again?
So weird. Just searched for them too and looks like they’ve either been restored to retail price or sold out. Not sure if they’re coming back! I do like these though from LMB. I know they’re not the same, but have that glove quality about them, and I think maybe a hidden wedge inside the shoe? https://smtm.me/s/79c264
Thank you! I saw these yesterday. I just love the apollo being like a sock shape (no gap in the ankle) and I love the almond toe… I set alarms for them on all resale sites lol wish me luck!
I’m so curious about how this pencils out for Croissant. I’ve heard stories that TRR is barely profitable. Plus, the sheer amount of resale sites and items is mind boggling. Are they VC funded? Do they have condition requirements? What do they do with the bought back items? Is it based on selling data rather than the stuff?
TRR is more than unprofitable. They are at risk of bankruptcy! I don’t think it has anything to do w a lack of market interest though, the logistics of the business though just seem to really chip away at whatever margins they were trying to create. I’m curious about what happens with croissant too. Where the products go how much they resell them for what platform they resell on. Super interesting to consider whether the product they sell might be different from what we assume though.
Given it’s a browser extension, it’s super likely there’s a data component! But we’re all already being tracked, so might as well get some cute stuff out of the surveillance lol
This resale idea is interesting. I've never bought used, sold, or consigned. It's almost akin to a soft landing if I make a mistake in judgement and reach out over budget. Something for me to think about!
By the way. I hope your malady heals quickly. It's never fun having issues with mobility. I used to have issues when I ran a lot. Now I swim and bike... and hike on dirt trails. Walking on concrete isn't pleasant while trying to heal and build bone strength!
Wait explain a little more what stops from shopping consignment. I’m intrigued!
And re injury, it’s def getting better. I’m already weaning off the boot but there were a couple of weeks in there where I was straight up depressed. Will not take the pleasure of long distance walking for granted
What stops me is that I have no 'style' and shopping for (gently used) for separates poses angst. For example. I walk into a consignment shop. I find the perfect top/blazer or vest. Next I must find something to go on the bottom. Typically this poses an issue. I'm long torso, short (muscular) legs. So I would need to go to a store that carries petites (I've found plus size and average but almost never short.) I likely found something quality in the consignment, or maybe not but the next issue is that I need to address materials. As a budding fashionista I simply don't know how to put together materials that complement. Also, likely the consignment (the few I've been in) of course the style and materials are a bit older. "Off the rack" materials confuse me while trying to piece together say. a linen with a knit, if this is even a thing.
Let's talk about condition. For me the piece has to be close to new, maybe worn once. In higher end consignments this hasn't been a problem, but what constitutes a 'good deal' or what might my psychology be in shopping this as opposed to a department store?
I think there is a certain psychology shopping used, consignment, and so forth. Maybe you could do a future piece on this subject. Remember. Middle America. That being said, I'm taking a special trip into San Fransisco here in a few weeks and this will be one of my projects: exploring metropolitan consignments. Part of this project will be finding a few with personality.
Back in the 80s I 'shopped' aka window admired Rodeo Drive with my mother. I found a Ted Lapidus store where I discovered a bag I just had to have. I spent the money and was thrilled with my purchase. For years I carried it as a sort of briefcase or to bring resumes in while job interviews. I'd never considered selling or putting in on consignment. I did a quick search and found it on E-bay for $229.
You opening this up will lead me to explore the avenue further. Maybe I'll find designer dreams that will fit my budget. Thank you!
Oh yes, you can't not get depressed sidelined from a foot or leg injury. I'll offer you a small piece of advice. Alternate walking in the park on dirt or grass with concrete. And don't wear jelly or flimsy shoes while doing either anytime soon. I ignored this advice many times and paid the price. The problem is once this sort of thing happens it seems to reoccur, and scar tissue will start to form. When you wakeup at 66 this scar tissue will find unimaginable ways to sideline you. And remember to stretch before going out walking, even short distances while you're new to the malady.
Do you follow Amy Smilovic from Tibi on social media? She addresses a lot of the initial questions that you have about what materials go with what and how to wear shapes together. Although I am curious about why after you find a perfect something in a consignment shop you have to find a bottom! Maybe you don’t yet have the perfect bottom? But if you do, just wear that!!
I'll follow your suggestion to follow Amy. I'm not familiar with her.
I was a dealer and in management for over 40 years in casino gaming. I wore tuxedo attire and sweats. I shopped off mannequins when I went out at night, which was rare. I worked swing and graveyard. Social outings were days and at the pool. Haha, not overstaying the obvious, but when I needed anything I typically started from the top and worked down.
Of course had I anything in the closet that worked I would have worn it happily.
When I say starting my wardrobe from scratch I'm not exaggerating in the least.

Or not how we think about what we buy but just…how we buy

I also find this grim, glad to see I'm not alone!

Just beautiful….I love the sheer not-a-wedding dress the most. I hope I see you before Bebe arrives….sending ❤️
3 weeks to go!

Hi! How does the Iro Jellies Sandals from Ancient Greek size?
Hi! Pretty true. I’m wearing a 6, which is my regular size but am also a tiny bit swollen from the heat/pregnancy and they are still fine.
Thanks😊
