Haven’t read this one yet because I had an idea for a question and didn’t want to forget! What to wear when I’m a Pilates teacher and am SOOOOOOOOOO bored of wearing Lycra all day every day but also need to be able to do Pilates but also really wanna look cool and not like a Pilates teacher....... x

Yes, large trousers give you weight, in the best sense of the word. Jane Birkin in a recent podcast was wearing Carhartts and praising their energy btw. I also find they are the easiest item of clothing to lend a sense of fashion/nonchalance in a work environment that’s more stiff than the contexts you describe.

Shoes though: I totally see your point about not wearing big shoes with big trousers - but what do you do when you have ankles and calves that are not quite as dainty as yours? I often find that I wouldn’t be quite able to pull off the same type of shoes.

The top deviation: can it be a silk shirt, which is more vulnerable than a stiffer fabric? Can the deviation come from pattern in the shirt? Would you in that case wear fun jewellery at all, at the risk of being a bit overloaded?

And one I wanted to ask in your jewellery post and didn’t get a chance: ok good jewellery brands. But what makes a good piece of jewellery. What makes it fun without being tacky or cheap - and this is not always to do with the price tag.

Hats would be interesting to talk about. Especially in relation to face shape. Or where to where them. Can anyone wear them, if properly chosen, or only hat heads (têtes à chapeau)?

I love that you talk about clothes’ attitude. I think it’s what matters most about them (in addition to keeping us warm ;-))

Late to your Substack. Thank you for all your interesting thoughts on proportions and getting out of our comfort zones. Maintaining proportions that work with your body type seems to increase my confidence to try new silhouettes, color, fabric patterns if each peice fits properly (I use this term loosely) and is proportionally balanced look as you mention. Love the equation! I think it’s kinda of up personal style preferences and how they make you feel. Fit is key. I will take a $25 pair of track pants to my tailor to get the proper fit.

New to this joint, just getting to this post now. Inspired by the ideas and outfit equation. I bought the Good American cargos you mentioned (on sale) and am looking forward to having some fun with them. And I'm stealing your subject line.

Definitely yes to hats! I would also looove a dispatch on statement pieces - how to wear them casually so they don’t hang sadly in your closet only to be taken out once a year. Orrr maybe an entire dispatch on condiments. I’m here for it all xx

Thanks! Love so much the mix of your texts between fun and seriousness, like the mix of jewellery you just suggest, and like I also expect a hat to be. Yes, please, hats. I love them, but now that I have cut my long hair into a pixie I do not find any hat that looks nice on me. I know you cannot relate but I trust your expertise. Always a pleasure reading you.

I just ordered those blue pants. I have a short torso so the high rise might be problematic but you never know!

Love this post! A button-down shirt is also my comfort zone so this was really helpful :) Also had a suggestion for a topic that might not be as relevant in New York now that it's June (and maybe not relevant anywhere other than San Francisco at this time of year), but I was wondering if you have any tips for those summer and spring days when the weather doesn't match the season? (i.e., I've lived in San Francisco for a couple years now, and I still never know what to wear on those chilly summer days when the fog rolls in but all I want to wear is a flowy sun-dress and sandals!) It just feels so wrong to be all bundled in wintery clothes in the summer--it makes me feel ~off~ or out of sync the whole day, ya know? And I REFUSE to throw on a black North Face jacket over a lovely summery outfit!! I just won't do it! And maybe this isn't just unique to SF, because when I lived on the East Coast I remember always having trouble picking outfits on those few chilly days that sometimes happen in late April or early May, when the last of winter is lingering a bit. Would love to hear if you have any ideas! This newsletter really has helped me get more creative with my outfits :)

Loved this one! I have a backlog of your posts to catch up on, but I'm not sure if this has been discussed; how to wear practical items like running shoes and belt bags without looking like a tourist? I currently pair them with more "put together" looking outfits to balance things out, but I would love additional suggestions! The only reason I leave the house most days now is to walk the dog 🤷🏻‍♀️

I love the way you humorously write. Joo lee lee is darling. So I have a suggestion for further topics. I think you probably don’t wear glasses but I need suggestions for some good ones. Stylish ones. And then another thing, hats with sunglasses. How is it possible that others can wear hats and sunnies together but my glasses and hat seem to run into one another and not get along? Small head? Idk help!

This sums up my life. Extrovert with social anxiety. I live by humour when feeling awkward (99% of the time) but also like to be taken seriously at times. Hard to balance the two. I wear gold rings, gold necklaces and a child's shell bracelet around my ankle, it was £1 from a UK beach shop. Balance 😃
